The laptop was not his. It came out of the crew equipment locker with an inventory number on the underside, and he clipped it to the tether and took it outside for one photograph, because the view was extremely good and he was not going to be up here forever.
The seals then did, at that pressure, exactly what seals do at that pressure. He brought what was left down to a small repair shop on the next rotation, signed the ticket, went straight back up and has not been down since, so everything off that drive is public property now and most of it is still up here, going round.

He clipped the laptop to the tether, held it up against the Earth and took one photograph. It is slightly blurred, his glove is across the corner, and it is still the only file from that drive that anybody has actually opened.

He carried the remains into a small repair shop on the next rotation, put them on the counter and signed the ticket while the man behind it was still deciding what to say. Then he went up again. That was eighteen months ago.

The drive itself is at four hundred and eleven kilometres, doing sixteen passes a day, and everything on it went public a folder at a time as the fragments were catalogued. He watches it go over and describes the whole thing as a good result.

Fixed at launch weight. Nothing held back in a locker for anybody, and no second crate that turns up quietly on a later flight.
Vented on the way up. There is nothing left to unlock, nothing to pull back in and nobody on the ground with a key to it.
Nothing on the buy, nothing on the sell, no docking fee, no charge for the view. The only cost is the Robinhood Chain gas.
Mint and freeze revoked. He can lose a laptop in a vacuum, and he has, but nobody can lose what is in your wallet.
Every fragment locked, catalogued and published, including the photograph, which is blurred, and the checklist, which said not to. He is going round again in ninety two minutes and would like everybody to look up.
